This year, temperatures have soared in the southern section, particularly for the inshore reef areas.

Australia's Great Barrier Reef has suffered widespread coral bleaching after sea temperatures reached record high levels last month, scientists say.
How severe the event was will be known in a few weeks, once aerial surveys along the 2,300km reef are finished and sea temperatures fall.
