Queensland police are looking for a man who allegedly poured hot coffee on a nine-month-old boy who was with his family in a Brisbane park.

On Aug 27, the baby was at a picnic with his family at Hanlon Park at about noon when the incident occurred.

He was sitting on a picnic rug with his mother when the man, who was unknown to them, approached the pair and poured hot coffee on him, reported Australian news site news.com.au.

The man fled the scene, running out of the park and along a residential footpath.

7News Australia spoke to an off-duty nurse who lived near the location of the incident, who told the media outlet she had heard screams coming from the park. She went to her balcony to see what was happening, and heard the baby’s mother screaming “my baby, my baby”.

She then rushed down to assist them, taking the baby to her apartment where he was placed under a cold shower before paramedics arrived. He was then taken to Queensland Children’s Hospital.

The Queensland Police Child Protection and Investigation Unit is investigating.

A police appeal for information published on Aug 28 said that after the “serious assault”, emergency crews were called to the scene, and the baby was taken to hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries.

According to 9News, the baby suffered burns to his chest and face, and has undergone surgery in hospital.

The police describe the man as being 30 years old to 40 years old, of a proportionate build, and with tanned skin. He is seen in CCTV footage wearing a black-and-blue checked long-sleeved shirt, khaki-coloured shorts, black sneakers, a black hat and black-framed reading glasses.
