E3 2015: Final Fantasy VII remake leads trio of major game reveals at PlayStation conference

A remake of 1997's beloved role-playing game, Final Fantasy VII led a trio of major game reveals at Sony's PlayStation conference at E3 in Los Angeles.

The new version of the game will debut on PlayStation 4 with a release date to be announced.

The reveal trailer showed glimpses of main characters Cloud Strife and Barret Wallace, and what looked like Midgar, the city the game's intro is set in.

A release issued by publisher Square Enix said that key members of the original game's staff will lead the development of the remake.

Also unveiled to massive cheers at the show was a crowdfunding campaign for Shenmue III, the third instalment of an open world series that has been missing in action since 2001.

The Kickstarter campaign has already raised almost US$1.9 million (S$2.56 million) since it was put up earlier on Tuesday, just shy of its US$2 million goal.

It became the fastest ever game to hit the US$1 million mark on the crowdfunding site, and the second-fastest ever Kickstarter campaign to do so.

In the reveal trailer, series creator Yu Suzuki said: "No matter where I go I'm asked about the third version. People ask me when it'll be released."

Finally, footage from long-awaited Sony title The Last Guardian was shown, six years after it was first announced.

Development on the game was rumoured to be troubled.

It is the latest from director Fumito Ueda, who helmed the critically-acclaimed PlayStation 2 titles Ico and Shadow Of The Colossus.

The Last Guardian will be released in 2016.
