Property agent jailed for causing pedestrian's death and other offences

A property agent, who caused the death of a pedestrian and committed other traffic offences, was jailed a total of six months and fined $7,000 on Tuesday. Godfrey Guo Yuen Far, 51, was also banned from driving for 10 years.

He pleaded guilty to six charges - causing death by negligence, twice for driving while under suspension, speeding, driving without insurance coverage and using a mobile phone while driving.

A district court heard that Guo was driving along Bukit Batok West Avenue 5 in the early hours on March 5 this year when he failed to keep a proper lookout and hit Mr Boojang Salmard, 73, at a pedestrian crossing. Mr Boojang died 31/2 hours later in hospital from a severe head injury.

Two months later, a patrol officer caught him using his phone while driving along Lorong 23 Geylang.

When his particulars were screened, the licensing officer of Traffic Police confirmed that his driving licence had been temporarily suspended from March 7.

Earlier in May last year, Guo was caught speeding along Serangoon viaduct at almost 100kmh when the speed limit was 70kmh.

A screening of his particulars showed that he had been suspended from driving for 12 weeks from March 9 to May 31 that year for accumulating a total of 24 demerit points.

Guo, a father of two, said he had no choice but to drive on May 13 this year as he had no money to take a cab and had to attend his divorce proceedings in the family court.
