When she was in secondary school, Ms Deborah Lau found herself struggling academically. She estimates her parents spent $10,000 on tuition over a three-year period. She also has three siblings who went through similar phases.

"I was falling behind in class and tuition gave me the discipline I needed to study," Ms Lau, now 23, tells The Sunday Times.
