A teenage girl who kicked and scratched a police officer when she visited her house to arrest her brother admitted to two charges in court yesterday.

Carmen Chng Jiawen was 16 years old in June 2013 when she refused to open the door to the family's Paya Lebar home and shouted vulgarities at the police.

She later scratched the policewoman and kicked her in the knees and stomach. After she was handcuffed and taken to a police car, Chng swung her legs against a back door and kicked a rear window.

Chng, now 18 and working in the service industry, pleaded guilty to hurting a policewoman and causing mischief. Two other charges were taken into consideration.

Her defence counsel asked for probation instead of a prison sentence due to her young age.

Community court judge Mathew Joseph has adjourned the case to Aug 13 for a pre-sentencing report to be prepared.

Anyone convicted of causing hurt to a public servant faces up to seven years' jail, a fine, caning or a combination of such punishments.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Carene Poh said the case was a serious one involving a police officer and damage to police property.

She agreed that Chng's age is a mitigating factor, but also asked for her "unusual family situation" to be considered.

Chng's brother, Pierre Chng Yuheng, 19, was jailed for a week in March for contempt of court and fined $4,500 on two counts of criminal intimidation.

He was found guilty of threatening his then landlady in May 2013.

The full-time national serviceman had also crossed his arms, glared at the ceiling and refused to answer the prosecution's questions while in court.

He intends to appeal against his conviction and sentence, and will appear in court again next month.
