Android phone users can now download The Straits Times SoShiok app, which re-launched its iPhone version in mid-January.

The food app, which is free, offers a comprehensive range of content from the popular Taste pages in The Sunday Times, as well as food news and reviews from the other English newspapers published by Singapore Press Holdings (SPH).

It is developed by SPH's news portal AsiaOne and named after its food website, The Straits Times SoShiok (www.soshiok. com).

The iPhone version has been downloaded more than 60,000 times in the first two months since its launch.

Foodies can use the app as a one-stop mobile dining guide to find the latest restaurants, read food reviews and pick up recipes, among other things.

Registered users can also earn points for using the app to read and comment on stories, or send in a food review. The points can be exchanged for food and drink vouchers.

Among the goodies for users of the app, free gelato will be given away this week.

Previous treats included SoShiok Goodie Boxes filled with gourmet food items recently featured in the weekly Posh Nosh column by food editor Tan Hsueh Yun.

To get a free scoop of Alfero Artisan Gelato, flash the app on your iPhone or Android phone at the entrance of 100AM Shopping Mall in Tanjong Pagar, from noon to 2pm on Friday; and at the gelato chain's outlet in Marina Square Shopping Mall from 2pm to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Up to 500 scoops - with a choice of flavours such as pistachio, mango, chocolate and durian - are available. Each person is limited to one scoop, while stocks last.

Alfero Artisan Gelato's Italian owner, Mr Marco Alfero, 40, said: "I've heard many good things about the app and am very happy to work with SPH on the giveaway. Our brand is focused on high quality, just like the SoShiok app, so it makes for a good pairing."

Undergraduate Samantha Lim, 22, said: "My friends have been using the app on their iPhones, and now I can finally download it on my Android phone.

"I like that I now have the restaurant listings and reviews at my fingertips. I hope to make it to Marina Square on the weekend for gelato too."

The Straits Times SoShiok app can be downloaded for free at the Apple App Store for iPhone users and the Google Play Store for Android phone users. Feedback can be sent to soshiok@sph.com.sg.
