SINGAPORE – My neighbours are strangers to me, yet I make friends easily on the move, whether in Singapore or abroad.

In Fukuoka recently, I started a conversation with a young Japanese woman seated next to me in a casual restaurant serving motsunabe, hot pots of fatty-rich offal and chunky vegetables, perfect for a chilly December day.
