Largest mass 'cai qing' display by lion dancers at Gardens by the Bay

SINGAPORE - The Supertree Grove at Gardens by the Bay was turned into a sea of red, yellow and white on Saturday afternoon by 50 lions from award-winning lion dance troupe Tian Eng and Dragon Dance Centre.

The lion dance performance set a record for the "largest mass cai qing ceremony" - earning the Gardens by the Bay its first entry into the Singapore Book of Records.

Cai qing, or "picking the greens" in Chinese, is a ritual in which lion dancers overcome obstacles to get a bunch of green vegetables which comes with a red packet. It is usually performed for luck at business- and shop-openings.

The event at Gardens by the Bay was part of its Chinese New Year celebrations, which will be held till March 1. Activities include calligraphy workshops and other lion dances.
