KUALA LUMPUR (THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - Malaysian lawmaker Nurul Izzah has finalised her divorce from her estranged businessman husband, Raja Ahmad Shahrir Iskandar.

The eldest daughter of opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, Ms Nurul, 33, was married for 10 years and has two children.

She will share joint custody of the children with her husband, who has been instructed by the religious family court to pay RM1,500 (S$750) each month in childcare. She did not claim alimony or right over property.

The Lembah Pantai MP is a star in the opposition Parti Keadilan Rakyat, where she holds the position of vice-president.

She is hugely popular among middle-class liberals for her strong multiracial image and is seen as a potential national leader.

She first burst onto the political scene in 1998 after her father was sacked as deputy prime minister and charged in court with corruption and sodomy. Ms Nurul Izzah became his strongest defender. From a shy teenager, she grew to become a powerful public speaker and politician, outshining even her father.

Raja Ahmad Shahrir reportedly works in corporate finance in a management consultancy and is also a research associate at the PR-linked Institut Rakyat think-tank.
