What to take to a festive party: The sweet stuff

You never want to turn up to a party empty-handed.

Here are eight delightful options that will wow both the host and the guests.

1. A CHOCOLATE STUMP FROM OLD SENG CHOONG

Stump cakes are all the rage this Christmas - with the cakes modelled after tree stumps, not logs.

There's nothing pretentious about Old Seng Choong's 1.2kg stump cake ($62). At first glance, it looks simple and wholesome, with an old-school feel.

Inside, a layer of boozy rum-soaked cake is sandwiched between moist chocolate devil's food cake spread with hazelnut buttercream. The cake is covered in a generous amount of chocolate ganache. Understated decadence.

2. GALETTE DE ROIS FROM BAKERZIN

The Galette De Rois ($40) is a traditional pastry that's usually consumed on the 12th day of Christmas. Its sweet and fragrant almond frangipane filling is encased in a buttery puff pastry. Also known as the King's Cake, the pastry has a treat buried inside the galette and whoever finds it gets to be king for a day.

3. SUGEE CAKE FROM SUNSET RAILWAY CAFE

One of the highlights at this cafe is its fresh sugee cake that is made in a kugelhopf pan. Not only is the cake pretty, it is also rich and moist, its texture and flavour, sublime. It is served with a lemon drizzle that complements the cake well. A whole cake is priced at $50.

The Bread Table has two pies (2kg each) made with a buttery sourdough cheese crust this Christmas. The sweet-tart King's Pie ($74.50, $68 for orders before Dec 15) is filled with cherries and raspberries and topped with a crunchy walnut streusel. The Golden Apple Pie ($57.50, $52 for orders before Dec 15) is filled with Polish apple chunks, and finished with an almond streusel topping.

5. WHISKY PROFITEROLES CHOCOLATE TART FROM GOODWOOD PARK HOTEL

Here, fluffy choux pastry profiteroles are filled with a whisky custard, then decorated with carmelised pistachios and icing that resembles snowflakes. The base of the croquembouche tower is made of chocolate sponge and hazelnut cream. The tart is priced at $48.

6. CHOCOLATE CHRISTMAS TREE

Tarte by Cheryl Koh, a specialist French-style tart by the Les Amis Group, has a range of festive offerings this season. Its Chocolate Christmas Tree is crafted from premium dark chocolate, topped with a mixture of nuts and candied fruits imported from France. These include Angelica, orange peel, cranberries, almond nibs, and pistachios. The tree ($52), which is about 15-cm in height, is surrounded with handmade chocolate bonbons, chocolate mendiants and gingerbread stars.

It also has a range of delicate and elegant tarts which start at $38 for a large one.

This gluten-free chocolate cake ($68) is dense and rich, and perfect for this time of year. It is topped with lush hazelnut creme made with hazelnuts from Italy, and fresh berries. The Muslim-owned bakery and cafe uses organic unrefined sugar in its cakes and prides itself in using fresh wholesome ingredients.
