SINGAPORE – In 2021, when civil engineer Shamith Athukorala’s daughter told him she had difficulty seeing the whiteboard in school, he was worried. 

Nethuli Athukorala, then aged five, also complained that bus numbers appeared blurry when they were about 50m away.
