SINGAPORE – Tiong Bahru resident Charmaine Lim has seen waves of food and beverage businesses, like a game of musical chairs, start, stop and come and go in her neighbourhood.

“Tiong Bahru has always seemed to me like a revolving door – when one cafe heads out, another will take its place,” says the 38-year-old freelance graphic designer. She has lived in a three-room Housing Board flat in the area with her 67-year-old father since 1999.
