What are some obstacles that prevent Singaporeans between ages 25 and 34 from volunteering?
Young adults seldom volunteer because of insecurity - they worry their bosses may not like them taking leave to do volunteer work.
Kok Mei Hui
The most likely obstacle is work, as that's the age when they are trying to carve out a career while balancing dating or married life.
Theo De Roza
It all depends on their sincerity and passion... one can make adjustments to find time if they are serious about volunteering. It is those who do not have the passion to volunteer who tend to give excuses.
Peter Tan
Many people will not volunteer via e-mail or sign-up forms. E-mail is impersonal, overwhelming and easy to ignore. A personal call or text is more likely to result in finding the help that is needed.
Show people how they can volunteer in bite-sized chunks rather than taking on big projects.

How can hygiene be improved at food centres? Are there any cleaning practices that should be changed?
The cloth used to clean the tables is reused many many times but I'm not sure how many rinses are given to it in between various wipes... I'm not sure what bacteria is left behind from the cloth that has gone through many other tables before mine.
Gillian Teng
Hygiene doesn't just start from the trays; it actually starts from the food handlers... their gloved hand would touch every single apparatus at the stall, including dirty pieces of cloth to clean the counter top, and with the very same gloved hand, they prepare the food.
Margaret Chong
All fair statements, but would require a massive overhaul of back of house services, dishwashing machines, stewarding areas... which translates into large cost increases.
Neil Bailey
To encourage tray return, a writer suggested using incentives, such as a free dessert voucher, instead of penalties. Will this work better?
Incentives? If you were not so egocentric, you wouldn't need incentives. Returning things to where they should go, cleaning up after yourself would be as natural as breathing. Self-centredness is what's wrong with people today.
Christina Teh
Lower food prices, since customers clearing trays are helping businesses save on costs. If you want people to pay for food and do the cleaning work too, people are going to think that they are being ripped off.
Tessa Koh
For decades, patrons eat at the hawker centre, and leave the tray and utensils behind. The hawkers themselves would clear their own utensils... It's a habit, and you can't expect it to change overnight.
Dave Tan
Isn't the $1 deposit for the tray similar to the coin deposit for shopping carts in supermarkets? Works to a limited extent... You have the time, you return it and get your money back. You don't have the time, you sacrifice the money.
