Tennis: S'pore Slammers grind out 24-23 win over top-ranked Indian Aces in IPTL

The DBS Singapore Slammers chose an opportune time to post its first win of the Coca-Cola International Premier Tennis League (IPTL), beating top-ranked Micromax Indian Aces 24-23 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Czech Republic's Tomas Berdych was the hero of the night, winning the super shoot-out against Frenchman Gael Monfils to give the Slammers victory. He had also mounted the comeback that took the Singapore team to within one game of their opponents when he beat Monfils 6-2 in the men's singles match.

Said Berdych, the world No. 7: "There is no better feeling than to share the win and happiness with everyone here. You can see that anything is possible in this format."

Australian men's doubles pair Lleyton Hewitt and Nick Kyrgios levelled the overall game score to force the seven-minute shoot-out when they won the shoot-out against Rohan Bopanna and Monfils. Serena Williams, the world No. 1 women's player, also won her women's singles match against Ana Ivanovic by defeating the Serbian 6-4.

Former world No. 1 and eight-time Grand Slam champion Andre Agassi, however, endured another disappointing loss when he was beaten 6-2 by France's Fabrice Santoro.

In the mixed doubles, Williams partnered Bruno Soares but lost to Bopanna and Sania Mirza 6-4.

The Aces, despite the loss, remain top of the standings with 18 points. The Musafir.com UAE Royals, who defeated the Manila Mavericks 26-11 in the day's other tie, are in second spot with 15 points, while the Mavericks are third with 13 points. The Slammers are fourth with 10 points.
