WASHINGTON (WASHINGTON POST) - A report of gunfire on Friday (Feb 16) on a college campus near Seattle sparked a lockdown, but law enforcement officials who scoured the campus could find no evidence of a shooting.

An alert from officials at Highline College on Friday morning had said to "please lock down all offices and classrooms until further notice."

Coming just days after 17 students and teachers were killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, the second-deadliest public school shooting in the United States, the alert quickly triggered fear.

Officers searched and cleared buildings.

But shortly before noon, local time, an official said they had found no signs of a shooting or located people with injuries.

People posted photos on social media saying they had barricaded in classrooms and were hiding in offices.

After hearing reports of the sound of gunshots in the area, and because the location is a school, officials decided to lock it down, said Jarod Kasner, a commander with the Kent Police Department.

"We haven't had any indication of a shooting, or a shooter, or injuries," Kasner said, after police searched the campus.

Shortly before noon, Kari Coglon Cantey, a spokeswoman for the college, shared the latest update: Police had issued an all-clear statement.

The school remains closed for the rest of the day.

Highline is a community college in Des Moines, Wash., about halfway between Seattle and Tacoma.
