Who is Joseph Schooling and how tall is he? Google searches for swimmer peak after Olympic win

SINGAPORE - Since Saturday, interest in Singaporean swimmer Joseph Schooling has risen substantially.

The number of Google searches here for Singapore's first Olympic gold medallist peaked at about 9.12am Singapore time on Saturday (Aug 13) morning - when he beat three world-class swimmers, including Michael Phelps, to win the 100m butterfly final at the Rio Games.

There were 10 times more searches for Schooling, as compared to Phelps at the same time.

It appears that many in Singapore wanted to find out more about the young champion who beat Phelps, winner of the event for the past three Olympics.

Searches for basic information about him formed the bulk of the questions asked on Google.

Here are the top five questions about Schooling, according to Google Trends.

Singapore's first Olympic gold medallist is known to most Singaporeans by now. But if you really don't know, read this.

Just 21, Schooling was born in 1995.

3.Where does he live?

Marine Parade.

4. How tall is he?

At 184cm, the swimmer is tall by Singapore standards, but among competitive swimmers, he's not out of the ordinary. Phelps stands at 193cm, Chad le Clos is 186cm while Laszlo Cseh is 188cm.

Singapore. His father, Colin Schooling, was born in Singapore. His mother May, is Chinese and hails from Ipoh in Malaysia. She is a Singapore permanent resident and has lived here for over 30 years.
