SINGAPORE - Some of the world's top athletes will be in town next week to help present the Singapore Olympic Foundation (SOF)-Peter Lim scholarships, in keeping with the event's practice of inviting sports stars for the presentation.

Valencia Football Club players - Santi Mina, Mathew Ryan, Jaume Domenech and Javi Fuego - as well as legends and La Liga ambassadors Gaizka Mendieta and David Albelda will be here for the May 20 award ceremony. They will be joined by four-time Olympic volleyball player and two-time Olympic silver medallist (2008, 2012) Logan Tom of the United States.

The athletes will help present scholarships totalling $839,000 to 308 student-athletes at ITE College East. They will also take part in fringe activities during their time in Singapore. Mr Peter Lim, the scholarship's principal donor and Valencia owner, will also be present.

Tom, 34, will conduct two training clinics (May 18 and 19), one for the national beach volleyball team and one with schools.

The Valencia players will participate in the fourth edition of the Football With A Heart charity event on May 21.

They will then be part of a meet-and-greet event organised by the Singapore Committee for UN Women on May 22. Valencia Football Club are global partners with UN Women, the first professional sports team to support its push for gender equality. Details to the ticketed event can be found at http://j.mp/footballforgood.

In previous years, the SOF-Peter Lim scholarship has had several top personalities in sports to be part of its award ceremony, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Lewis Hamilton, Luis Nani, Pep e and Jose Mourinho.

The SOF-Peter Lim scholarship was started in 2011 to help young athletes facing financial challenges to pursue sports. It also has a high performance component for athletes under 18, with swimmer Quah Zheng Wen and shooter Martina Lindsay Veloso among previous recipients.
