SINGAPORE - Defending champions Raffles Institution (RI) overcame a spirited Meridian Junior College (MJC) to win 2-1 on Friday and claim the A Division Boys' floorball championship for the third year in a row.

In a closely-fought game at Delta Sports Hall with plenty of chances and physical tussles, RI's Tng Zong Wei scored the winning goal five minutes into the third and final period, after MJC's Janus Lim had earlier pounced on a defensive mistake to equalise for his team. The boys in black had taken the lead five minutes into the second period through Ryan Tan.

RI captain Silas Choe, 18, said after the game: "We felt a bit taken aback after we conceded, but of course, in the end we managed to bounce back. I'm glad that my team continued to play our hearts out, even though it was neck and neck throughout the game."

It was double heartbreak for MJC, whose girls' team had earlier lost to Yishun Junior College (YJC).

MJC, who were defending champions, took an early 2-0 lead through Janessa Kong and Emily Ong's efforts. YJC's Alicia Chia closed the gap to one goal before the end of the first period.

With both teams spurning chances, YJC's Ong Swee Ling stepped up for her team, scoring the equaliser four minutes into the third and final period. The centre then completed a remarkable comeback for her team with an effort from distance, less than a minute to go.

This was YJC's first floorball title since 2014, where they had beaten the same opponents with the same scoreline in the final.
