SINGAPORE - Five years ago, the idea of playing in a top tier Thailand club seemed far-fetched for many local-born footballers like Zulfahmi Arifin, who kept tabs on the competition as he admired the high technical levels of Asean's strongest league.
While powerhouses such as Muang Thong United and Buriram United were popular with fans here, the Singapore midfielder started following the more unheralded Suphanburi FC, a team formed in 1997 whose highest finish was second place in 2012.
