SINGAPORE - Two lorries, a tipper truck and a taxi were involved in a pile-up along the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) on Wednesday (Sept 23) morning, the third major accident to take place on the expressway in three days.

The pile-up occurred at 11.22am near the Clementi Ave 2 exit in the direction of Tuas.

A Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) spokesman said it dispatched two fire engines, two ambulances, a fire bike and support vehicle to the scene.

The driver of the smaller of the two lorries was trapped in his vehicle and had to be freed by SCDF personnel using hydraulic rescue equipment.

According to Lianhe Wanbao, that lorry was the most severely damaged - the front section was smashed up as it was caught between two vehicles.

The lorry driver, who is in his 50s, and another man in his 40s were sent to the National University Hospital (NUH), SCDF added.

Police investigations into the accident are ongoing, said a police spokesman.

According to updates from the Land Transport Authority on Twitter, traffic was congested all the way to the Normanton exit, about 4km away from the accident site.

This is the third accident on the AYE this week.

Early Tuesday morning, a cement truck was involved in an accident which blocked up lanes one, two and three on the AYE towards the Marina Coastal Expressway, also near the Clementi Ave 2 exit.

And on Monday, the police arrested a 63-year-old man, surnamed Leow, who was believed to have driven a red Honda against traffic on the expressway, near the South Buona Vista exit towards Changi at around 6am.

His actions allegedly caused an eight-vehicle pile-up involving a motorcycle, lorry, two cars and four taxis.

Three people, including Leow, were sent to NUH for treatment.
