SINGAPORE - Nearly 1,000 boxes of Acuvue contact lenses here have been voluntarily recalled by Johnson & Johnson Vision Care due to "quality issues".

Lot L002QH9 of Acuvue Oasys was recalled due to brush bristles potentially being found between the blister package and foil, while lots B00GW4Z and B00HRMG of Acuvue Oasys for Astigmatism contained lenses being "off power", resulting in distortion or blurriness for the consumer, said the company in response to queries from The Straits Times.

Lot numbers can be found on the back of the outer box or on the printed (front) face foil of the blister package.

The affected products distributed in Singapore amount to 929 boxes, which is 0.03 per cent of the total products sold since their release in the market, Johnson & Johnson Vision Care said in a statement released on Saturday (Oct 21).

"Our top priority is patient safety and we hold ourselves to high standards for product quality and customer satisfaction. Importantly, no significant health risks have been reported due to these issues," said a company spokesman. "We have taken measures to help ensure these issues do not recur."

All affected products sold at optical stores here have been retrieved as of Monday, with the company working with the Health Sciences Authority, Singapore Optometric Association and eye care professionals.

Johnson & Johnson Vision Care said it has not received any consumer complaints or adverse incident cases associated with the affected product lots in Singapore.

Customers who have purchased the affected products will receive a one-to-one exchange for their contact lenses. They can either consult their eyecare professional where they purchased the product or contact Acuvue Support on 800-101-3130, or write to support@acuvue.com.sg to find out how to return the product.

The product recall in Singapore is part of a larger recall in Asia, affecting Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan as well. Japan was the first market to be affected, although the company spokesman said that it is "unable to share the total number of products affected across the four markets".
