SINGAPORE - A motorcyclist who was seriously injured after being dragged under a car on the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE) is in stable condition, reports said.

The victim was on his way back from work when he was hit from the left by a black SUV on Wednesday evening (May 24).

Mr Shaiful Amjad, 46, is a lift technical manager and works at Jurong Island.

After being swiped by the black car, he was pushed to the rightmost lane where a white car ran over him and dragged him for some distance.

A video which captured the accident went viral on the Internet.

He suffered multiple fractures, broken bones and internal bleeding, but his head was protected by his bike helmet, Shin Min Daily News reported.

He also went under the white car and was not run over by its wheels, his brother Shaiful Bahri told the Chinese evening daily.

Mr Shaiful had an emergency operation immediately after the accident, and was admitted to the intensive care unit.

His condition is now stable after two operations, but he is still under observation at the hospital.

His boss told Shin Min Daily News that Mr Shaiful had been working with him for 14 years, and that he is paying Mr Shaiful two months' advance salary to help the family tide over this tough period.

Mr Shaiful has two daughters aged six and eight, and his wife, Ida, is pregnant with their third child, Lianhe Wanbao reported.

Many of their relatives were at the hospital to visit Mr Shaiful, who has a breathing tube and unable to talk, the evening papers reported.

But he was already cracking them up with jokes.

"When he woke up, we asked him if he wanted water," said one of his nieces.

"He nodded then joked, signing with his hand, that he wanted Coke."
