SINGAPORE - A Sembcorp garbage truck caught fire on the Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE) on Monday (Dec 19) afternoon.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force was alerted to the fire along BKE towards Woodlands, near Mandai, at about 12.15pm. Its firefighters extinguished the flames using a water jet.

Two fire engines, a Red Rhino and two fire bikes were dispatched.

There were no reported injuries, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

A spokesman from SembWaste told The Straits Times on Monday that the fire involved an off-duty SembWaste vehicle.

"As the vehicle was travelling along the BKE to the company's depot, our employee who was behind the wheel detected smoke and immediately pulled the vehicle onto the road shoulder and safely evacuated the vehicle," said the spokesman.

SembWaste is investigating the incident and will "fully cooperate with the authorities to establish the root cause of this incident".
