Three members of Gurkha contingent taken to hospital after fire at Gurkha housing compound

SINGAPORE - Fire broke out on Saturday (Oct 28) afternoon at the void deck of an apartment that houses officers from the Gurkha contingent and their families, resulting in four people being taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) said three of the victims are members of the Gurkha contingent, while the fourth is a contractor. The SPF spokesman did not provide the nature of the injuries.

The Straits Times understands that two of the victims are Gurkha police officers. The residential facility near the contingent's Mount Vernon Camp includes several apartment blocks and houses more than 2,000 people.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it had received a call about the fire at Bartley Ridge, at 42 Mount Vernon Rd, at 1.10pm.

The blaze, which involved several sofas that were at the void deck, was extinguished by the SCDF with two water jets.

"Due to the fire, units at the second floor sustained smoke and heat damage," said an SCDF spokesman.

SCDF is investigating the cause of fire.
