SINGAPORE - Efforts to save water will continue with Singapore's economic development, with posters slated to be put up at over 70 construction sites promoting good habits of water use.

The Land Transport Authority initiative was announced in the presence of 200 representatives from over 40 construction companies at Saturday's launch of the forthcoming Singapore World Water Day .

More than 200 initiatives organised by over 400 community partners will take place this month.

Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Masagos Zulkifli, speaking at the event at Kallang River @ Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park, said: "It has to start within ourselves. Simple habits like keeping showers to within five minutes, using a mug when brushing teeth and washing clothes on a full load go a long way."

Eight thousand scouts from secondary schools will spread the message to local residents as part of the Youth Water Ambassador Badge Programme.

Mr Zulkifli also highlight the government's efforts to make Singapore's water supply more resilient to threats from extreme weather events brought about by climate change. These include a fifth NEWater plant which will open by the end of this year and a third desalination plant at Tuas planned for completion next year.

"We need to continue to plan ahead and invest sufficiently in our infrastructure to ensure resilience in our water supply against various risks," he added.

March 22 has been designated by the United Nations as the annual World Water Day, although Singapore holds its own event, "make every drop count". On that night, Singapore landmarks such as the Esplanade, Singapore Flyer and Sports Hub will be bathed in blue light to mark the occasion.
