SINGAPORE - An electric bicycle caught fire at Telok Blangah Crescent on Thursday (Sept 22) but no one was injured.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to the fire at Block 12, Telok Blangah Crescent at 11.26am.

It was extinguished by members of the public before SCDF officers arrived.

It is understood that they threw buckets of water on the fire.

SCDF sent two fire bikes and a Red Rhino to the scene.

No injuries were reported and the cause of fire is under investigation, SCDF said.

The bike was charging at a coffee shop when it caught fire, Shin Min Daily News said.

A taxi driver who witnessed the incident told the Chinese evening daily that the bike first made creaking noises, like it was cracking. It emitted smoke, then flames suddenly appeared.

There were four loud "pops" as it burned, he said.

An assistant from one of the hawker stalls ran forward with a bucket of water and helped to douse it.

The owner of the bike, who works at the coffee shop, said he had left the bike at the coffee shop on Wednesday as he had forgotten to charge it.

He then asked a colleague to charge it for him on Thursday, but unfortunately it ended up destroyed in the fire.
