SINGAPORE - The body of a man was found in the waters off Bedok Jetty on Friday (July 7) after he drowned, The Straits Times understands.
The police said that it was alerted to a case of unnatural death at 5.40pm. A man was found motionless in the water and was subsequently pronounced dead by paramedics at scene. Police investigations are ongoing.
The body of a 12-year-old schoolboy was also found in the waters near Bedok Jetty in May after he drowned while playing in the sea off East Coast Park with six friends.
Muhammad Suhaimi Sabastian was among four boys who found themselves struggling about 50m away from the shore, and a nearby housewife, Ms Silvia Hajas, managed to rescue three of them after hearing their cries for help.
But Suhaimi disappeared under the surface and his body was found after a three-hour search operation. His uncle and eldest brother said that he did not know how to swim despite a requirement for primary school pupils to take part in swimming programmes.
Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam said after attending Suhaimi's wake that more needs to be done to ensure young people know how to swim and have the skills to survive in open water.
