PHUKET - A 55-year-old Singaporean man was critically injured after crashing his car into a fence at a monument in the Thai resort island of Phuket, The Phuket Gazette reported.

According to the report, Ang Koh Lin crashed a white Toyota Fortuner into the metal fence adjacent to the Two Heroines Monument in Phuket on Thursday night (Feb 1).

Ang was given first aid at the scene by emergency responders and sent immediately to hospital.

Police say they believe he had been driving from Paklok, about 10 minutes away on the island's east coast, heading west towards the monument at high speed when he crashed the car.

The Two Heroines Monument, located at a traffic roundabout 12km from Phuket City, is one of Thailand's revered historical memorials. The monument honours two sisters who helped save Phuket from Burmese invaders in 1785 during the reign of King Rama I, according to the Thai tourism authority's website.

Police believe Ang may have been unaware of road closures at the monument roundabout at the time of the incident.

They also said that he may have fallen asleep at the wheel as several types of medication had been found in the vehicle.
