Retired Malaysian air force captain gets 7 years for letting ISIS member use bank account

KUALA LUMPUR (BERNAMA) - A retired captain of the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) was sentenced to seven years imprisonment by the High Court on Tuesday (Feb 6) for providing financial services through his bank account to an individual linked to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

Justice Mohd Sofian Abd Razak meted out the sentence to Azuddin Mahmud, 54, after he pleaded guilty to letting his Maybank account be used by Mohamed Danny Mohamed Jedi and his brother Muhammad Wanndy Mohamed Jedi, 27, a member of militant group ISIS.

The former air force officer committed the offence - involving credit and debit transactions of RM3,500 (S$1,183) - between Jan 27, 2016 and Jan 29, 2016.

The court ordered Azuddin's sentence to run from his arrest on June 25, 2017.

In his judgement, Datuk Mohd Sofian said the action of the former officer was utterly regrettable considering he had served with the air force for more than 20 years.

The judge said as a former RMAF officer, the accused should know that he was committing an offence.

According to the facts of the case, Azuddin was arrested after police found three suspicious transactions in his Maybank account between Jan 27, 2016 and Jan 29, 2016.

Deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Mustaffa P.Kunyalam had urged the court to impose a heavy sentence in view of the seriousness of the offence.
