MELAKA - A 66-year-old Singaporean, Ms Lamrah Asid Ali, has been identified as the passenger on a Malaysian tour bus who was killed in a tragic six-vehicle crash on the North-South Expressway in Ayer Keroh.

Alor Gajah Police Superintendent Ashari Abu Samah said the female bus passenger died at the scene of the accident that claimed the lives of six other victims.

A spokesperson for Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs told The Straits Times that the ministry has been providing consular assistance and support to the affected Singaporeans and the family of Ms Lamrah through the Singapore High Commission in Kuala Lumpur and Consulate-General in Johor Bahru.

The other victims are the bus driver Noorisnien Khamid, 56, and five who were aboard the same multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) – driver Khairul Izwan Mazupi, 32; his wife Fadzlenna Ramli, 32; their youngest son Muhammad Umar Khairul Ikhwan, two; Fadzlenna’s father Ramli Ab Wahab, 66, and passenger Fauziah Jaafar, 69.

Mr Ashari told Sinar Harian that initial investigations showed a lorry and a tour bus carrying 27 passengers were travelling southbound, while the MPV, a trailer and a sedan were heading north.

He explained that at the scene, the right front tyre of the lorry driven by a 31-year-old man had come off and went into the middle lane.

The tour bus hit the tyre, lost control, and veered into the opposite lane.

“As the bus veered into the opposite lane, it collided with a trailer driven by a 27-year-old man, accompanied by a 16-year-old passenger.

“The collision caused the trailer to veer into the left lane, hitting the road barrier before colliding with the sedan and the MPV,” he said in a statement on Dec 24.

As a result, all five MPV occupants were pronounced dead at the scene, while the injured victims were rushed to hospitals in Melaka and Alor Gajah for further treatment.

Two other children of the couple, Nur Sofea Humaira Khairul Ikhwan, four, and Muhammad Uwais Al-Qarni Khairul Ikhwan, seven, were treated at Hospital Melaka.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of Malaysia’s Road Transport Act.
