Taiwan's top courts set to rule on same-sex marriage

Taiwan is on the verge of becoming one of the first places in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage. The constitutional court meets this week to debate a law in the civil code that restricts marriage to a man and woman.

TAIPEI (REUTERS) - Same-sex marriage could have its first big win in Asia.

A panel of grand justices is set to meet this week in Taiwan to decide whether a law stating marriage should be restricted to a man and woman is unconstitutional.

Members of the LGBT community are hoping for a breakthrough.

The island is considered one of the most gay-friendly places in Asia, hosting a yearly gay pride event that draws in tens of thousands of people from across the region.

Wang Tien-ming and He Hsiang have been together for 32 years, and hope they can soon enjoy the same benefits as heterosexual couples.

"Even if there were only two homosexuals or only one homosexual in Taiwan, they still should have the right to get married. I think that's what the government should do," said Wand and He.
