SG60: A*Star banks on deep tech ecosystem in innovation drive

A*STAR and British engine-maker Rolls-Royce are investing another S$8 million in their joint lab set up less than two years ago with Singapore Aero Engine Services Pte Ltd (SAESL) to develop smart manufacturing technologies, bringing the total investment of the five-year collaboration to close to S$70 million. A*STAR and Rolls-Royce will introduce a sixth theme to the programme that is Advanced Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) to develop advanced manufacturing technologies to repair high-value engine components. A*STAR’s Advanced Remanufacturing and Technology Centre (ARTC) An local SME that has brought A*STAR’s science to Rolls-Royce’s factory is KA Industrial Engineering (KA), a system integrator. A*STAR has developed a technology using robots to automate the process of spraying boron nitride on fan blades of aircraft engines. Boron nitride serves as a protective coating in the manufacturing process. KA has scaled up the innovation and implemented it in Rolls-Royce’s facility in Seletar early this year, replacing the conventional approach of using handheld guns. The technology ensures consistency in the thickness of the coating, helping to reduce defects arising from inconsistencies. This saves costs and considerably improves the quality of manufacturing. The new setup also helps boost productivity since an entire batch of blades can be left to dry at the same time, instead of one at a time. Through this public-private partnership model, A*STAR has helped propel KA from a supplier to an R&D partner, a strategic move for the local enterprise as it looks to dive deeper into the aerospace industry. Photo Opportunity : 1. Automated process of spraying boron nitride on Rolls-Royce’s engine fan blades at ARTC (unconfirmed) 2. Rolls-Royce’s engine fan blade at ARTC 3. Manufacturing activities on ARTC’s shop floor
