“Let them eat cake,” said 18th-century French royal Marie Antoinette when her starving subjects complained about the lack of bread, or so the famous story goes. This suggestion was apparently not well received. In fact, it was so poorly received that she would subsequently be beheaded.
This story has since been debunked – there is no evidence Marie Antoinette said any such thing – but it is oft repeated because it does carry some lessons relevant today.
