World leaders offer condolences following South Korea crush

TOKYO - World leaders have expressed sadness and sent condolences to South Korea following a crush on Saturday that killed at least 153 people.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said he was “deeply saddened” after the tragic turn of events.

“I’m hugely shocked and deeply saddened by the extremely tragic accident in Itaewon, Seoul, that took many precious lives, including those of young people with their future ahead of them,” Mr Kishida tweeted.

Chinese President Xi Jinping also sent condolences to South Korea.

“On behalf of the Chinese government and the people of China, I express our deep condolences for the victims,” Mr Xi said in a message to South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

United States President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden sent their condolences, writing: “We grieve with the people of the Republic of Korea and send our best wishes for a quick recovery to all those who were injured.”

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak tweeted: “All our thoughts are with those currently responding and all South Koreans at this very distressing time.”

French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday offered France’s support to South Korea.

“Heartfelt thoughts for the residents of Seoul and the Korean people after the tragedy at Itaewon. France is by your side,” Mr Macron said on Twitter.

In Canada, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he wished “a fast and full recovery to those who were injured”.

Pope Francis, addressing the faithful in St Peter’s Square on Sunday, said: “We also pray… for those, especially young people, who died overnight in Seoul due to the tragic consequences of a sudden stampede.”

In a telegram to Mr Yoon, Russian President Vladimir Putin said: “Please convey words of sincere sympathy and support to the families and friends of the victims, and also wishes for the swift recovery of all the injured.” AFP, REUTERS
