Uzbek President's health status unclear

ALMATY • Speculation was rife about the health of Uzbek President Islam Karimov yesterday, after the authorities said his health had worsened "sharply". But some diplomatic sources have indicated that Mr Karimov, 78, has died.

ISIS losing access to Turkey-Syria border

WASHINGTON•The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) group is about to lose access to Turkey's porous border with Syria, the Pentagon has said, amid a Turkish offensive.

ISIS now retains control of only about 25km of the border with Turkey along an area to the east of the small Syrian town of Al-Rai.

Brazil's ousted president appeals

BRASILIA • Brazil's ousted president Dilma Rousseff has appealed to the Supreme Court to overturn the Senate's decision to remove her from office for breaking budgetary rules.

The Senate voted 61-20 on Wednesday to dismiss the leftist leader.
