Rare January storm forms in Atlantic

MIAMI • Hurricane Alex has formed in the Atlantic near the Azores, becoming the first such storm in January in nearly 80 years, US forecasters said. The National Hurricane Centre said the storm was packing winds of 140kmh as it moved towards the Azores.


6 in serious condition after medical trial

PARIS • Six people are in a serious condition after taking part in a medical trial for an unnamed European laboratory to test a new drug, France's health ministry said yesterday. The ministry did not say what the medicine was intended to be used for, but said the six volunteers, one of whom was in a coma, had been in good health until taking the oral medication at the clinic in Brittany, northern France.


Chinese envoy sends best wishes to sick boy

WASHINGTON • Chinese Ambassador to the United States Cui Tiankai and children of the diplomats at the Chinese embassy on Thursday sent their best wishes to an American boy who has cancer.

Dorian Murray, eight, from Connecticut, is a cancer patient who has decided to stop treatment. His family said on Facebook earlier this week that he wanted to be "famous in China", because of the country's Great Wall.


Two copters carrying 12 crash off Hawaii

WASHINGTON • The US Coast Guard is searching for two military helicopters that reportedly crashed off the Hawaiian island of Oahu while carrying a total of 12 people, a spokesman said yesterday. The Coast Guard was alerted late on Thursday to the reported collision between two Marine Corps helicopters carrying six crew members each, she said. Search aircraft have spotted a debris field about four kilometres off the north shore of Oahu, but no people, she added.
