More help for Italy to handle migrant influx

PARIS • France, Germany and the EU executive yesterday promised Italy more support in handling an influx of migrants arriving by boat from Africa, agreeing to bolster training for Libya's coast guard and to relocate asylum seekers more swiftly.

The European Commission said it would present steps after a meeting of its leadership today.


Trump visiting UK? London in the dark

LONDON • The British government is not aware of any plans for a visit by US President Donald Trump in the next few weeks, Prime Minister Theresa May's spokesman said yesterday.

British media reported that government sources had been warned that Mr Trump could visit his golf resort in Scotland at short notice in the next two weeks, during a scheduled trip to Europe for the Group of 20 summit.


Ecuador impeaches ex-state comptroller

QUITO • The Ecuadoran Congress has impeached a former state comptroller living in the US for his ties to scandal-plagued Brazilian construction firm Odebrecht.

Lawmakers voted on Sunday in favour of censoring - or removing from position - Mr Carlos Polit, in a symbolic move against the former official who had resigned on June 20 and moved to Miami, citing health concerns.
