ISIS commander killed in Syria

BEIRUT • The Syrian army said yesterday it had killed the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria's (ISIS) military commander in Syria during operations in the country's north, where Russian-backed government forces are seizing territory back from the terror group.

The commander, Abu Musab al-Masri, was named among 13 senior ISIS figures killed in Syrian army operations east of Aleppo.

Riyadh slammed for razing Shi'ite quarter

DUBAI • United Nations cultural experts slammed Riyadh yesterday over the razing of a restive Shi'ite Muslim town's old quarter, saying the work erased cultural heritage and violated human rights.

The Special Rapporteur in the field of cultural rights, Ms Karima Bennoune, said the authorities had moved ahead with razing al-Musawara despite repeated pleas by the UN to halt the work.
