Iran's president making historic visit to Europe

TEHERAN • President Hassan Rouhani heads to Italy and France from Saturday for the first visit by an Iranian leader to Europe in 16 years, as ties thaw after Teheran's nuclear deal with world powers.

In Rome on Saturday and Sunday, Mr Rouhani will meet Italian officials and Pope Francis, while on Monday and Tuesday in Paris, he will see President Francois Hollande. On the agenda will be potential business deals and talks on regional issues, including the conflict in Syria.


18 years' jail for murder of adopted daughter

MADRID • A separated Spanish couple were sentenced yesterday to 18 years in prison for drugging and suffocating their 12-year-old adopted Chinese daughter.

A nine-member jury in the north-western region of Galicia on Oct 30 unanimously found the pair guilty of killing their daughter, Asunta Yong Fang Basterra Porto.


Nephews of Venezuelan First Lady arrested

NEW YORK/CARACAS • Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro yesterday condemned what he called imperialist attacks and ambushes, after two nephews of his wife and First Lady Cilia Flores were arrested in Haiti and taken to the United States to face drug trafficking charges.

Mr Franqui Francisco Flores-de Freitas, 30, and Mr Efrain Antonio Campo-Flores, 29, were flown to New York on Tuesday, people familiar with the matter said on Wednesday.
