Death toll from Fiji super cyclone rises

SUVA • The death toll from super cyclone Winston jumped to 42 yesterday as concerns grew for remote Fijian villages still waiting for help after the most powerful storm in the Pacific nation's history.

While global aid efforts are intensifying, with New Zealand saying it will send two navy ships, relief teams are yet to reach some isolated places devastated in the weekend tempest.

Spain's Socialists try to form coalition govt

MADRID • Spain's Socialists, racing to try to form a coalition government following inconclusive elections, got their first pledge of support yesterday after signing a deal with centrist party Ciudadanos.

The deal is a boost for Socialist leader Pedro Sanchez as he seeks enough backing from lawmakers to become premier during a vote next week.

Hundreds of new galaxies discovered

SYDNEY • An Australian telescope used to broadcast live vision of man's first steps on the moon in 1969 has found hundreds of new galaxies hidden behind the Milky Way by using an innovative receiver that measures radio waves.

Scientists at the Parkes telescope, 355km west of Sydney, said they had detected 883 galaxies, a third of which had never been seen before. The findings were reported in the latest issue of Astronomical Journal.
