SINGAPORE - Nations have been grappling with the growing threat of climate change for years and negotiations led by the United Nations (UN) have been a key way to tackle the crisis.

As the science on impacts and causes of climate change becomes stronger and weather extremes more severe, the urgency to act has grown. But the UN process has long been accused of being too divided and too slow, in stark contrast with the increasingly rapid march of global warming.
