At least 36 dead, over 50 injured in Vijay rally stampede

At least 36 people were killed and more than 50 injured on Sept 27 in a stampede at a rally held by Tamil actor Vijay, who is campaigning for election, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu said.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said eight children and 16 women were among the 36 people who died in the district of Karur in Tamil Nadu during a political rally by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, Vijay’s party.

Earlier, state lawmaker Senthil Balaji told reporters that 58 people were hospitalised.

Vijay, one of Tamil cinema’s most bankable actors for three decades, has drawn massive crowds to his public meetings since launching his political party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, in 2024, which has targeted both the state ruling party DMK and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party.

It also comes as Mr Trump launches an assault against left-wing activists in the wake of several deadly attacks, which the president and his allies claim are evidence of a “domestic terrorist” network.

Europe extended their commanding lead over the United States in the Ryder Cup to 8-1/2 to 3-1/2 after recovering from a shaky start to win the morning foursomes session 3-1 at Bethpage Black on Sept 27.

The visitors turned down the volume on the home fans on Long Island as they became the first team to win each of the first three sessions of a Ryder Cup on foreign soil.

England’s Tommy Fleetwood and Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy outclassed Collin Morikawa and Harris English 3 and 2 to get Europe’s first point, as the duo dubbed “Fleetwood Mac” improved their career foursomes record to 4-0-0.
