PM Lee Hsien Loong, President Trump witness signing of Singapore Airlines-Boeing deal worth $19 billion

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and President Donald Trump on Monday (Oct 23, US time) witnessed the signing of an agreement between Singapore Airlines and aircraft manufacturer Boeing to buy 39 aeroplanes, worth close to US$14 billion (S$19 billion).

Singapore Airlines CEO Goh Choon Phong and Boeing president and CEO Kevin McAllister signed the deal for SIA to buy 20 Boeing 777-9s and 19 787-10s.

Mr Trump said the deal would create some 70,000 American jobs.

Singapore to extend SAF contribution to counter-ISIS coalition, says PM Lee Hsien Loong at meeting with President Trump

Singapore will extend to next year its existing deployment of Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) assets and personnel to the global coalition to defeat the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terror group, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said.

He gave this commitment to US President Donald Trump during their meetings at the White House on Monday (Oct 23, US time), Mr Lee said at a joint press conference after both leaders met.

Singapore and the United States have strong defence ties, Mr Lee said, adding that Singapore supports the US military presence in the region, and has hosted US Air Force and US Navy aircraft and ships on rotational deployments since 1990.

Maternal response to crying baby exists across cultures: Study

A baby's cries activate specific areas of a mother's brain related to movement and speech, a study of mothers in several countries published on Monday (Oct 23) revealed, reinforcing the idea of biological maternal instinct.

The National Institute of Health study showed regardless of culture, mothers were likely to react to their infant's cries by showing affection, distracting, nurturing, picking up and holding.

The researchers carried out a series of studies into maternal behaviour using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of the brain.

Pink's Beautiful Trauma tops Billboard, one of 2017's biggest debuts

Pop star Pink soared to the top of the US Billboard 200 album chart on Monday (Oct 23) with one of the year's biggest album sales debut, beating out new albums from rapper Gucci Mane and rocker Beck.

Beautiful Trauma, Pink's seventh studio album, sold 408,000 album units in its first week. This comprised sales from albums and songs and streaming consumption, according to figures from Nielsen SoundScan.

The strong first week sales is the biggest debut for a female artist this year and the fourth biggest album debut of 2017, coming in behind Kendrick Lamar's Damn., Drake's More Life and Ed Sheeran's Divide.

Football: Cristiano Ronaldo wins Fifa best player award

Cristiano Ronaldo's stunning last season saw him win the 2017 Best Fifa men's player of the year trophy as Real Madrid dominated a star-studded awards ceremony in London on Monday (Oct 23).

The Portuguese ace, who has scored 44 goals in just 48 games for club and country so far this calendar year, played a major role in Real winning both La Liga and the Champions League.

He scored twice in a 4-1 win over Juventus in the continental final at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium on June 3. Real boss Zinedine Zidane took the corresponding manager of the year award, with the Spanish giants providing five players in the Fifa team of the year.
