Elon Musk to interview Trump on X social media network

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk is due to interview Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on the X social media network on Aug 12 in an event that could inject more surprises into the turbulent US presidential election.

The interview, scheduled for 8 p.m. Eastern Time (0000 Tuesday GMT), could provide the former president an opportunity to seize the limelight at a time when his campaign is seen as sagging.

His Democratic rival for the Nov 5 election, Vice President Kamala Harris, has erased Trump’s lead in opinion polls and energised Democratic voters with a series of high-energy rallies.

Two boys, 12, admit taking part in UK riots

Two 12-year-old boys on Aug 12 admitted to participating in disorder last week, becoming the youngest to confess to taking part far-right inspired riots that swept across northern England.

Over 500 people have been charged for taking part in the riots, which followed a July 29 stabbing in which three girls were killed.

One boy, who cannot be named due to his age, pleaded guilty to two charges of violent disorder at a court in Manchester, northwestern England.

The US has prepared for what could be significant attacks by Iran or its proxies in the Middle East as soon as this week, White House national security spokesperson John Kirby said on Aug 12.

Kirby said the US had increased its regional force posture and shared Israel’s concerns about a possible Iranian-backed attack after Iran and Palestinian Islamist group Hamas accused Israel of carrying out the assassination of a Hamas leader in Teheran in July.

“We share the same concerns and expectations that our Israeli counterparts have with respect to potential timing here. Could be this week,” Kirby told reporters.

Donald Trump amplified a wave of false social media claims that his opponent Kamala Harris used artificial intelligence to fabricate a picture of her supporters at a Michigan rally last week – an allegation disproved by photos and videos.

“Has anyone noticed that Kamala CHEATED at the airport? There was nobody at the plane, and she ‘A.I.’d’ it, and showed a massive ‘crowd’ of so-called followers, BUT THEY DIDN’T EXIST!” the Republican presidential nominee wrote in the first of a series of posts Aug 11 on his Truth Social platform.

“There was nobody there!” he added in a second post.

Julian Alvarez leaves Manchester City to join Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid have signed Argentine forward Julian Alvarez from Premier League side Manchester City on a six-year contract, the LaLiga club said on Aug 12.

Financial details about the transfer were not disclosed by either club, but British media reported that the deal was worth around 75 million euros (S$108.57 million) plus 20 million euros in potential add-ons.

“Today I say goodbye to this wonderful club with many emotions. They were two very special years. During this time, I grew and learned a lot as a player and as a person,” Alvarez said on Instagram.
