Plane with 62 aboard crashes in Brazil, no survivors

An aeroplane carrying 58 passengers and four crew crashed on Aug 9 in Brazil’s Sao Paulo state, killing everyone on board, local officials said.

The aircraft, a French-made ATR 72-500 operated by the airline Voepass, was travelling from Cascavel in southern Parana state to Sao Paulo’s Guarulhos international airport when it crashed in the city of Vinhedo.

Images broadcast on local media showed a large plane nosediving at high speed, while others showed a large column of smoke rising from the crash site in what appeared to be a residential area.

“There were no survivors,” the city government in Valinhos - which was involved in the rescue and recovery operation in nearby Vinhedo - said in an email sent to AFP.

All through the week in Marseille, Maximilian Maeder has slogged in the summer heat under intense pressure, his emotions concealed behind his googles and black full-face mask.

And it was only when the teenager shared a long hug with his mother Teng Hwee Keng that it was evident that the Singaporean athlete was hurting. No words were exchanged between the pair, only tears.

Israeli strike kills senior Hamas figure in south Lebanon

An Israeli airstrike on a car deep inside Lebanon killed a senior figure from Palestinian armed group Hamas on the evening of Aug 9, a Hamas source and two other security sources told Reuters.

The strike, on the southern edges of the Lebanese port city of Sidon some 60km from the frontier, killed Samer al-Hajj, a Hamas security official who worked in the nearby refugee camp for Palestinians, Ain al-Hilweh. His bodyguard was critically wounded, the three sources said.

The Israeli military has been carrying out strikes against members of Hamas, allied Lebanese armed group Hezbollah and other factions in Lebanon over the last 10 months, in parallel with the Gaza war.

Trump apparently confuses politicians in helicopter tale

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump appeared to confuse former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown with former California Governor Jerry Brown during a press conference on Aug 9, as he related a fantastical story of nearly dying in a helicopter crash.

Speaking from his Florida home on a variety of topics, Trump related a tale of almost going down in a helicopter with Willie Brown, who briefly dated Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris several decades ago.

“I went down in a helicopter with him,” Trump said. “We thought maybe this is the end. We were in a helicopter going to a certain location together, and there was an emergency landing. This was not a pleasant landing, and Willie was, he was a little concerned.”
