UN conference on saving oceans

World leaders are convening at the United Nations headquarters from today for the first major bid to solve the toughest problems facing the oceans, from coral bleaching and plastic pollution, to overfishing and rising seas due to climate change.

The Ocean Conference in New York seeks to rally nations big and small to make meaningful changes to preserve what is arguably the earth's most important resource, experts say.


Opening of Sustainability Academy

The Singapore Sustainability Academy will have its official opening today. It aims to teach businesses, students and residents how to operate in more environmentally friendly ways. The building - which will produce its own power through solar panels - is on the roof terrace of City Square Mall in Serangoon Road. It was developed by real estate developer City Developments and the Sustainable Energy Association of Singapore.


Overseas events in spotlight

Local investors will look abroad for cues this week, now that the corporate reporting season has ended.

In Thursday's election in Britain , opinion polls suggest a closer contest than previously thought. The latest terrorist attacks there are now a factor. On Thursday, Japan will release its first-quarter economic growth figures, and on Friday, China will put out trade and inflation data for last month.
