Last week, four years to the day Mr Donald Trump first announced himself as an unlikely contender for the highest office in America, the President formally launched his bid to do it all again.

The mega rally at a basketball stadium in Orlando, Florida - largely a formality for a man who has not stopped campaigning since his candidacy four years ago - served as a useful marker of the start of a new American presidential election season.
