Yesterday, she and Mr Trump showed little common ground during their first meeting at the White House to discuss thorny issues such as defence spending and free trade deals. Sharp differences between the two played out in full view of the cameras, including an awkward moment at the Oval Office, where Mr Trump did not respond to Dr Merkel's suggestion of another handshake. A day after the meeting, Mr Trump accused Germany of owing "vast sums of money" to Nato.
