Sharp differences between the two played out in full view of the cameras, including an awkward moment at the Oval Office, where Mr Trump did not respond to Dr Merkel's suggestion of another handshake. A day after the meeting, Mr Trump accused Germany of owing "vast sums of money" to Nato.
