Western alliance in disarray despite united action on Syria

European governments have backed the US, British and French air strikes on Syria, but the operation is unlikely to narrow the gulf between Europe and America over what should be done in Syria.

"Allies expressed their full support for this action intended to degrade the Syrian regime's chemical weapons capability and deter further chemical weapon attacks," said Mr Jens Stoltenberg, secretary-general of Nato, the US-led military alliance in Europe.
